Choosing the best bedding for a hot climate

How to beat the heat with these bedding hacks

With the myriad choices in bed linen on the market today, how do you go about choosing the perfect bedding for a very hot climate? Taking energy saving into account, leaving your air-conditioner on all night is not a cost effective option and leaving windows open is a gilt-edged invitation to pesky mosquitos. The solution is to choose the correct bedding to help you keep cool on those muggy summer nights.

Consider the following interior design tips for choosing the ultimate hot-weather bedding:

Fabric: stick to all-natural material that won’t cling to your body, such as 100% cotton, which allows for air circulation and wicks away perspiration more effectively than synthetic fabric. Linen bedding displays similar properties but is prone to creasing, so unless you like the wrinkled look rather opt for durable cotton.

Thread count: a popular misconception is that a higher thread count means a better quality fabric. Thread count refers to the number of strands per square inch of fabric and a very high thread count (800 – 1 000) actually means the fabric is denser and so air circulation is greatly diminished. For a hot climate a thread count between 200 and 400 is ideal.

Duvets and their tog: a duvet’s ability to prevent body generated heat from escaping is referred to as “tog”, or thermal resistance. The higher the tog the more air, and thus heat, is retained by the duvet. In a hot climate a lower tog (3 – 4.5) is desirable to allow enough heat to escape and consequently keep you cooler.

Colour: dark coloured sheets and bedding will absorb light and heat shining through your windows during the day. Instead, select light and neutral coloured bed linens that reflect the light and hence stay cooler than their dark-hued counterparts.

Mosquito nets: apart from making your bedroom setting look sumptuous, mosquito nets serve a practical purpose in keeping out mosquitos and other flying critters. A mesh size of 1.2 mm will keep mosquitos out, whilst a smaller mesh size – such as 0.6 mm – will stop most biting insects. Nets can also be sprayed with insecticides to further repel insects.

To further enhance your African style bedroom décor consider your soft furnishings too. You can add gorgeous visual interest using colourful scatter cushions, textured blankets and plush mats to bring your look together effortlessly.

Did you know that linen, along with lightweight fabrics like merino wool, is the ultimate choice for hot weather? Summer clothing made from breathable fabric like linen and merino wool is perfect for staying cool and comfortable during the summer months. It's true!

With its exceptional breathability and lightweight nature, linen has been a go-to fabric for centuries in warm climates, especially for summer clothing. However, other fabrics like merino wool, chiffon, and chambray have also gained popularity. But here's the surprising part: linen, a natural fabric, is actually made from the fibers of the flax plant, not synthetic fabric like many people assume.

Linen is your best friend. Its natural fibers, such as merino wool and linen clothes, allow air to circulate freely, preventing that sticky and uncomfortable feeling often associated with synthetic fabric and lightweight fabrics. Plus, linen's durability and fiber make it perfect for season after season wear, especially in menswear. Its flannel-like texture adds to its appeal. Regular washing helps maintain its quality.

If you're looking for tips on how to beat the heat this summer, look no further than linen flannel shirts for menswear from Mulberrys. So buckle up and get ready to discover why linen shirts should be your go-to fabric when temperatures rise.

Great! The introduction section has been written following the given guidelines. In this blog post, we will be discussing the benefits of linen clothes and why they are a great choice for shirts. Let me know if there are any further modifications needed for your shirts or linen clothes, or if I can assist you with anything else.

Pros and Cons of Linen Fabrics

Linen shirts are a popular choice for hot weather due to their unique properties. Let's delve into the pros and cons of linen shirts fabrics to understand why they are favored by many.

Pros

Linen shirts boast several advantages that make them an excellent choice for hot weather.

  1. Highly Breathable: One of the most significant benefits of linen is its exceptional breathability. The natural fibers allow air to circulate freely, preventing heat from getting trapped against the skin. This breathability helps to keep you feeling fresh and comfortable even on the hottest days.
  2. Moisture-Wicking: Another advantage of linen fabric is its ability to absorb moisture efficiently. Linen can absorb up to 20% of its weight in water without feeling damp, making it ideal for those sweaty summer days. By wicking away sweat from your body, linen helps you stay dry and prevents discomfort caused by excessive perspiration.
  3. Quick-Drying: Linen has quick-drying properties, allowing it to dry rapidly after becoming wet. This feature is particularly useful during hot weather or when engaging in outdoor activities where sweating or accidental spills may occur. With linen, you won't have to worry about lingering dampness or uncomfortable clinginess.

Cons

While linen offers numerous benefits for hot weather, there are a few drawbacks that should be considered:

  1. Wrinkle-Prone: Linen has a tendency to wrinkle easily, which can be frustrating for some individuals who prefer a more polished appearance. However, this characteristic can also add charm and a relaxed vibe to your outfit if embraced as part of the fabric's natural texture.
  2. Special Care Required: Unlike other fabrics that can withstand rough handling during washing and ironing, linen requires special care to maintain its quality over time. It is recommended to wash linen garments in cold or lukewarm water, preferably by hand or on a gentle cycle. Ironing may be necessary to smooth out wrinkles, but it should be done while the fabric is still slightly damp for best results.

The Bottom Line

Despite its drawbacks, the benefits of linen outweigh the cons. Linen's breathability, moisture-wicking properties, and quick-drying nature make it an excellent choice for combating heat and humidity. While wrinkles are an inherent characteristic of linen, they can add a touch of casual elegance to your summer wardrobe.

To maximize the benefits of linen while minimizing its drawbacks, consider the following tips:

  • Choose linen blends that incorporate other fibers like cotton or synthetic materials to reduce wrinkling.
  • Hang your linen garments to dry instead of using a dryer to minimize creasing.
  • Embrace the natural texture and relaxed look of wrinkled linen as part of your personal style.

Ranking the Best Fabrics for Hot Weather

Linen, one of the most breathable fabrics available, ranks among the top choices for staying cool in hot weather. Its exceptional cooling properties make it a go-to option for those seeking relief from sweltering temperatures. While other fabrics like silk, rayon, terryrayon, Tencel, viscose, and cotton also offer some level of comfort in warm climates, linen stands out as one of the most effective choices.

Linen's ability to keep you cool is attributed to its breathability and lightweight nature. The fabric allows air to circulate freely around your body, preventing excessive sweating and ensuring optimal comfort even on scorching days. When compared to other breathable fabrics, linen often comes out on top due to its natural fibers that allow for better airflow.

Silk is another fabric known for its breathability and luxurious feel. It has excellent moisture-wicking properties that help regulate body temperature by absorbing sweat and allowing it to evaporate quickly. Rayon is a synthetic fabric that closely resembles silk but is more affordable. It offers good breathability and is lightweight, making it suitable for hot weather.

Terryrayon is a blend of terry cloth and rayon fibers. This combination results in a fabric that not only provides breathability but also absorbs moisture effectively. It's an excellent choice for those who tend to perspire heavily in hot weather.

Tencel, also known as lyocell, is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. This eco-friendly fabric boasts excellent moisture-wicking abilities while offering softness and breathability comparable to linen. Viscose is another popular choice due to its lightweight nature and ability to absorb moisture well.

Cotton, a widely favored fabric worldwide, provides decent comfort in hot weather conditions due to its breathability and moisture-absorbing properties. It allows air circulation while also absorbing sweat, keeping you cool and dry.

Linen remains the top contender. Its unique combination of breathability and lightweight design ensures maximum comfort even on the hottest days. Whether you're lounging by the beach or attending a summer event, opting for linen garments will help you stay cool and stylish.

Exploring the Coolness of Linen in Hot Weather

Linen is a fabric that has been cherished for centuries, and it's not hard to see why.Linen is a true champion. Its unique texture and properties make it the perfect choice for those scorching summer days when you want to stay cool and comfortable.

1. The loose weave structure of linen allows air to flow freely through the fabric, providing excellent ventilation.

One of the key reasons why linen is so effective in hot weather is its loose weave structure. Unlike tightly woven fabrics that trap heat against your skin, linen allows air to circulate freely. This means that as you move, a gentle breeze can pass through the fabric, cooling your body down naturally. It's like having your own personal air conditioner!

2. The absorbent nature of linen helps wick away sweat from your body, keeping you dry and cool.

Another fantastic quality of linen is its ability to absorb moisture efficiently. When you're sweating under the blazing sun, linen works tirelessly to wick away that excess moisture from your body. This not only keeps you feeling dry but also helps regulate your body temperature by allowing sweat to evaporate quickly.

3. Unlike synthetic materials that trap heat against your skin, linen's natural fibers help regulate body temperature.

Synthetic materials may be popular for their affordability and ease of care, but they fall short. Unlike these artificial fabrics, linen boasts natural fibers that are highly breathable and lightweight.

Linen's remarkable ability to regulate body temperature makes it an ideal choice for scorching summers or humid climates where staying comfortable can be a challenge.

Not only does wearing linen keep you cooler during hot weather, but its natural properties also make caring for this fabric a breeze! Linen can be easily washed at home using water and mild detergent. However, it's important to note that linen may experience some shrinkage when washed for the first time. So, if you're concerned about potential shrinkage, consider buying a slightly larger size or having your linen garments dry cleaned.

In addition to its cooling benefits and easy care, linen also offers a timeless style that exudes effortless elegance. Its light and airy appearance can elevate any outfit while keeping you comfortable throughout the day.

To sum it up,Linen is a game-changer. Its loose weave structure allows air to flow freely through the fabric, providing excellent ventilation. The absorbent nature of linen helps wick away sweat from your body, keeping you dry and cool. Unlike synthetic materials that trap heat against your skin, linen's natural fibers help regulate body temperature. So next time you find yourself battling the scorching sun, embrace the coolness of linen and enjoy its many benefits!

The Benefits of Silk for Warm Climates

Silk, with its luxurious texture and ability to keep you cool in warm climates, offers a range of benefits that make it an excellent choice for those seeking comfort in hot weather. Let's explore why silk is the perfect fabric for staying cool and stylish.

Silk is renowned for its natural protein structure, which allows air circulation while retaining moisture-wicking properties. This means that even on the hottest days, silk fabric can help regulate your body temperature by allowing air to flow freely through the fibers. As a result, you'll feel cooler and less sweaty compared to other fabrics.

Another advantage of silk is its lightweight nature. While linen is often hailed as the go-to fabric for warm weather, silk provides a viable alternative due to its breathability and weightlessness. Unlike linen, which can sometimes feel heavy and clingy when damp with sweat, silk remains light and comfortable against your skin throughout the day.

Furthermore, silk possesses unique moisture-wicking properties that draw perspiration away from your body. This feature helps evaporate sweat quickly, leaving you feeling fresh and dry even in sweltering heat. By keeping you dry, silk also minimizes unpleasant odors that can occur when sweat lingers on the skin.

In addition to its practical benefits in hot weather, silk adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to any outfit. Whether you're attending a summer soirée or simply going about your day-to-day activities, wearing silk instantly elevates your style quotient. Its smooth texture feels luxurious against the skin while exuding an effortless charm.

Consider incorporating silk into your wardrobe with these options:

  • Silk blouses: Opt for loose-fitting silk blouses that allow air circulation while providing a chic look.
  • Silk dresses: Embrace the lightweight comfort of silk dresses that effortlessly drape over your body.
  • Silk scarves: Add a touch of glamour to your outfit while protecting yourself from the sun by accessorizing with silk scarves.
  • Silk sleepwear: Experience ultimate comfort during warm nights by sleeping in silk pajamas or nightgowns.

Exploring Rayon, Terryrayon, Tencel, and Viscose Fabrics

Rayon, terryrayon, Tencel, and viscose are all semi-synthetic fabrics that offer breathability in hot weather. These fabrics are made from natural materials like wood pulp or bamboo fibers. While they may not match the cooling properties of linen, they can still provide a comfortable option for warm climates.

Rayon is a versatile fabric that closely resembles natural fibers such as cotton or silk. It is known for its softness and draping qualities. Rayon can be found in various styles including chiffon, which is lightweight and sheer, making it an excellent choice for hot weather. This fabric has good moisture absorption properties and allows air to circulate freely, helping to keep you cool.

Terryrayon is another semi-synthetic fabric that combines the absorbency of cotton with the drape of rayon. It has a unique looped pile construction on one side that gives it a plush texture. Terryrayon is highly absorbent and breathable, making it suitable for hot weather conditions. Its moisture-wicking properties help to keep sweat away from the body, allowing for better evaporation and comfort.

Tencel is a brand name for lyocell fiber made from sustainably sourced wood pulp. It is known for its softness and breathability. Tencel has excellent moisture management properties, absorbing moisture quickly and releasing it into the air efficiently. This makes it ideal for hot weather as it helps to regulate body temperature by keeping you dry and cool.

Viscose is a type of rayon fabric made from regenerated cellulose fibers derived from wood pulp or bamboo. It shares similar characteristics with rayon but may have slight variations depending on the manufacturing process used. Viscose offers good breathability and moisture absorption capabilities, making it suitable for warm climates.

While these semi-synthetic fabrics provide breathability, it is important to note that they may not offer the same level of cooling as linen. Linen is a natural fabric made from flax fibers and has exceptional moisture-wicking properties. It allows air to circulate freely, keeping you cool and comfortable in hot weather.

Advantages of Cotton Fabrics in Hot Weather

Cotton is a widely available and affordable fabric that offers good breathability in hot weather. It absorbs moisture well and allows air to circulate around your body, promoting cooling. Although cotton may not be as lightweight as linen, it remains a popular choice for staying comfortable in hot climates.

Cotton's breathability is one of its greatest advantages. The natural fibers of cotton allow air to pass through the fabric, preventing the accumulation of sweat and heat on your skin. This helps to keep you cool and dry even in the scorching summer months.

Another benefit of cotton is its ability to absorb moisture effectively. When you perspire, cotton absorbs the sweat from your body, keeping you feeling fresh and comfortable. Unlike synthetic fabrics that can trap moisture against your skin, cotton allows the sweat to evaporate quickly, preventing any sticky or uncomfortable sensations.

In addition to its breathability and moisture absorption properties, cotton also offers a wide range of options at affordable prices. Whether you're looking for basic t-shirts, dresses, or even bedding for those warm nights, there are countless choices available in cotton fabrics. Its availability makes it accessible to everyone regardless of their budget.

When compared to linen specifically, cotton may not be as lightweight; however, it compensates with its versatility and durability. Cotton garments can withstand regular wear and tear without losing their shape or quality. They are easy to care for and can be machine-washed without any special precautions required.

Moreover, cotton is known for being hypoallergenic, making it suitable for individuals with sensitive skin or allergies. It minimizes irritation by allowing proper airflow between the fabric and your skin while reducing friction that might cause rashes or discomfort.

Furthermore, if you enjoy outdoor activities during hot weather such as hiking or sports activities where sweating is inevitable, choosing clothing made from cotton will help regulate your body temperature. The fabric's breathability and moisture absorption properties will keep you feeling cool and dry, allowing you to focus on enjoying your outdoor adventures.

To sum up, cotton is an excellent choice for hot weather due to its breathability, moisture absorption capabilities, affordability, versatility, durability, hypoallergenic nature, and suitability for various activities. So next time you're preparing for the heatwave or planning a tropical vacation, consider adding some cotton garments to your wardrobe to stay comfortable and stylish in the sweltering temperatures.

Back in March of 2020, Bianca and Jana were dusting off their Fez’s and grabbing the pashminas out of storage in preparation to Rock the Casbah! However, as we all know and vividly remember - with March, came the eventual Covid shutdown, and instead of frolicking down the Moroccan streets, we all shut ourselves inside and watched the days tick by… 3 Years later, and now we can finally say - with conviction - that they’re going to Morocco at the start of September! This blog, filled with excitement and curiosity about all the weird and wonderful curios they might find, and endless sourcing they’ll do, stays as a reminder that sometimes plans change, things go awry and there’s not much you can do about it other than persevere - and that we did! So, here’s Bianca and Jana’s innermost thoughts about the trip, 3 years before it came to fruition, enjoy :) We've got our passports out and Jana has already picked out what she's going to wear each day… Come March [September] we'll be heading north with Air France to the Kingdom of Morocco, bright eyed and bushy tailed as we make our base in the ancient city of Marrakesh (also known as Marrakech to the French, but we're not French, so we'll go with the English version until all that fuss about Brexit is sorted out) - This turned into a year long negotiations trade, and now us outsiders would pay nearly double what we used to if we visit the UK - thankfully our flight is direct!! We'll be looking for inspiration and will be investigating what's there that we could possibly bring back to The Hoed. We can't wait to experience the atmosphere and afro-arabic influences of this amazing place as we visit the celebrated souks and off-the-beaten track artists and craftsmen that make Marrakesh so special. We're desperate to see the beautifully hand-crafted furniture, textiles, fabrics, rugs, carpets, objets d'art, accessories, lighting… anything that catches our eye and could possibly be brought back south. Berber mats and rugs are definitely on our list, as are the kind of furnishings you might find in a gorgeous Bedouin tent. If you think about it, the Bedouin refined the art of "glamping" into an artform - fabulous carpets on the ground, soft, billowing fabrics hung here and there, plump cushions spread on the ground, intricate leatherwork and carved wood, patinated metal… Total Glamping vibes! We just love all of it and will be tracking as much of it down as we can. We'll also have an eye or three out for wonderful ceramics and glassware and wonderful lamps that give off soft, filtered light. For us it's about workmanship, so we'll hopefully be finding the people who make furniture and ceramics using techniques that have been passed down over countless generations meaning that everything we look at will have its own, and its own special story. Our mission is to share those stories with you and, if it's feasible, bring some of that special workmanship home to the Rainbow Nation. We're most definitely inspired and are sure this is going to be a truly special trip! Counting the sleeps till then! Less than a month to go now - we will be keeping the updates going on our social channels as well as another few blog posts to explain in detail our wild adventures - Stay tuned!
